Bid to secure central varsity status for GU

By City correspondent

GUWAHATI, May 13 In an executive committee meeting of the GUTA held at the Gauhati University Faculty House, a resolution was taken to pressurize the varsity authorities to secure for the Gauhati University the status of a central varsity. A resolution was also taken to strive for A-grade accreditation of the NAAC, which only a few universities of the region have achieved.

GUTA president Prof Jogen Chandra Kalita told this correspondent that the varsitys teaching fraternity was demoralised over not being able to turn the varsity into a world-class institution. He said that the Inter Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of the university should be made more dynamic, vibrant and functional.

The GUTA president further said that the teachers body would also actively pursue the issues of campus boundary and security system at the Gauhati University. The varsity sold 65 bighas of land to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and in return, the competent authorities had promised to build the campus boundary. But this has not been done so far.

The committee further discussed the living standards in hostels and sports facilities available for students and the varsity community along with developing an e-resource centre of the Gauhati University, which are essential for NAAC accreditation.

In the first week of June, all the heads of the academic departments and the GUTA will prepare a strategy as to how to obtain A-grade accreditation. The committee will seek suggestions from all stakeholders.

In August, the GUTA will organise a national seminar. The committee has proposed to invite the NAAC Director as well.
