GUWAHATI, May 6 � In the backdrop of the rapid changes in the field of education across the globe, the State Government has decided to usher in some significant developments in the academic campus.
Education and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday revealed that a total of six committees have been constituted to recommend the much needed changes in the academic scenario in the State.
�From this academic session, all the colleges will enroll students in the HS level but the number would be decided by the respective colleges,� said Sarma.
It needs to be mentioned here that a few colleges have removed the HS level but this step has caused inconvenience to the student community. A committee of principals has been formed to look into this aspect.
The government is also keen to formulate a universal fee structure. For this another committee has been constituted.
�It is seen that a section of teachers have been indulging in non academic activities. To maintain the sanctity of the campus, it is important that teachers devote themselves to their academic activities only,� said Sarma adding that another committee has been constituted to ensure discipline in regard to the faculty.
On the other hand, the government also wants to introduce digital libraries in all the colleges in the State. For achieving this purpose, a committee has been constituted and the committee after visiting such digital libraries in the country will submit their plan.
�We also want to address the grievances of the students in regard to payment of fee. Some colleges charge high annual fee citing financial constraints. So we have appointed a committee that will do an assessment of the grants-in-aid required by the colleges so that students don�t have to bear the burden,� said Sarma.
To improve student-teacher relationship and to engage students more in extra curricular activities, a committee has been constituted that will suggest welfare activities for students in its report.
The government will also sit in discussion with the college principals every six months to bring the desired changes in the academic atmosphere.
�Each committee comprises three principals and they will submit their recommendations within two to three months,� said Sarma mentioning that in view of the challenges of the modern times, it has become of utmost importance to change the entire syllabus of Assam. He said that a high powered committee will soon recommend the changes in this direction.
