Bid to regulate plying of school buses

GUWAHATI, Oct 18 � The Regional Transport Authority has made special arrangement for regulation of school buses plying in the city.

Dr M Angamuthu, chairman of the Regional Transport Authority and Deputy Commissioner of Kamrup Metro, today directed the Transport Officer (Registration and License) to study all aspects relating to plying of school buses in the city and submit a report within one month.

There are 851 licensed school buses in the city. The survey will look at aspects like the present condition of the buses, driver�s license, whether the school buses follow all official regulations or not, and so on.

Dr Angamuthu also directed that a close tab should also be kept regarding the issue of issuing fresh licenses to school buses.

It is noteworthy that on Saturday a meeting was held at the district transport office on ways to prevent reckless driving of city buses in Guwahati, which has become a major menace in recent times.

The meeting decided to form a committee to look into the matter of reducing the number of stoppages on the roads where city buses ply.

Action to reduce traffic jams in GS Road were mooted during the meet, which was attended by senior district administration officials, besides officials from the Transport Department, ASTC, PWD, GMC and GMDA.
