Bid to prevent distortions in Bihu

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, April 24 In a bid to prevent distortions in the Bihu celebrations, the organizers of different Bihu functions of greater Guwahati in a meeting held on Thursday resolved to call a representative meet of the office-bearers of 30-odd Bihu committees of the city at the earliest.

The meeting also resolved to hold a Bihu workshop on an all-Assam basis in June/July for taking a consensus decision on how best to preserve the sanctity of the Bihu and other related issues.

In a statement, the Bihu organizers have expressed concern over the growing unsavoury incidents, especially in the recent Bihu celebrations.

We discussed issues such as wearing of dress not associated with Assamese culture by artistes while performing on the stage, unparliamentary conduct during performances, making loose comments, use of too many noisy instruments during performance, use of obscene words in Bihu songs etc. Such incidents have witnessed a spurt in recent years, and it is time the Bihu organizers took a collective stand to keep away these distortions from the Bihu and maintain its sanctity, it said.

The organizers also took exception to the irresponsible statements made by popular singers Zubeen Garg and Angarag (Papon) Mahanta on the State anthem during their recent performances.

The organizers further observed that the trend of stretching the Bihu celebrations for a long time from January to June/July was extremely disquieting, and held the electronic media largely responsible for the uncalled-for departure from tradition.

This is a disturbing trend and the electronic media is largely responsible for this undesirable fashion. This has greatly diminished the gravity and sanctity of the Bihu, it said.
