Bid to boost cargo movement in Brahmaputra

NEW DELHI, Sept 23 - Cargo movement on River Brahmaputra is likely to get a boost with the Centre drafting a new shipping policy and incentives, Union Minister of Shipping Nitin Gadkari said on Wednesday.

Addressing a press conference here today, Gadkari said that his ministry is working on several strategies, including introduction of new ships to ply on River Brahmaputra. He said upgrade of the Pandu jetty is also on the cards.

A Cabinet Note on new shipping policy and incentives has been drafted and awaiting consideration, he said.

�We are planning new developments,� he said, adding that efforts are on to link River Brahmaputra with the river system of Bangladesh.

The Minister further said that India has received an offer from Dhaka to develop ports in Bangladesh.
