GUWAHATI, June 24 - With militant outfits of the Northeast joining hands, improvement of coordination among the police forces of the States of the region has become vital and as such efforts will be made in the ensuing meeting of the police heads of the region, to ensure real time sharing of information on movement of militants.
Highly placed security sources told The Assam Tribune that apart from improving coordination among the police forces, other challenges faced by the police in the region would also be discussed in the meeting to be held in Guwahati on June 29 and 30.
Sources said that after the militant groups of the region joined hands, it is vital for the police forces of the region to improve coordination and share information. At present, these militant groups do not have bases in Bangladesh and Bhutan, but they still have strong bases in Myanmar and it is vital that the police forces of the region have better coordination to deal with the problem.
The militants sneak into India through Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland and there have been instances where the militants caused trouble in Assam and retreated to their hideouts in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland. Only better sharing of intelligence among the States could deal with such problems effectively, the sources said.
It may be mentioned here that during the last meeting of the heads of police chiefs of the country, the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister had a separate meeting with the heads of police forces of the Northeast and stressed the need for better coordination to effectively deal with insurgency in the region.
Management of the borders is also a major challenge as the NE States need to improve policing along the international border areas, while trying their best to ensure that the inter-State border areas remain peaceful. Though guarding of the international borders is the prime responsibility of the Central government, the States also have to play a better policing role along the international border areas to check movement of militants and other anti-national forces.
Cyber crime is another major issue, which is not only affecting the Northeast but the entire world, more so in the advanced countries. The militant groups are also frequently using the cyber space to lure youths to their fold and the States of the region will have to chalk out strategies to deal with the problem effectively, sources added.
The meeting will also be attended by senior officers of the Intelligence Bureau.
