Bhogdoi breaches embankment, 3 relief camps opened

By Staff correspondent

JORHAT, May 23 - The Bhogdoi river breached the embankment at two sites between Solmoura to Malow Ali under West Jorhat Revenue Circle on the outskirts here on Wednesday night, leading the district administration to open three relief camps.

A district administration source said that due to continuous increase in the water level of the Bhogdoi river on the north-western outskirts here since Wednesday afternoon, water flowed over the embankment in several areas, resulting in damage to the embankment-cum road and causing breach of the embankment at Malowkhat and Malowpam areas.

When contacted, Additional Deputy Commissioner Jayanta Goswami, who is in charge of the District Disaster Management Authority, confirmed the reports of breach of the Bhogdoi embankment at two places under Jorhat West Revenue Circle and opening of relief camps by the administration to provide shelter to people of the villages that were getting submerged due to the overflowing water.

He said that the administration has opened two relief camps at Malowkhat High School and Ghorpholia High School and over 150 people were taking shelter and more were expected to come. One more relief camp was later opened at Sarbadoi High School. Goswami said that relief materials were distributed to the people at the relief camps.

He said there were reports of water overflowing the embankment-cum road and the embankment of Bhogdoi at many places.

The ADC also stated that SDRF and NDRF personnel have been dispatched to the affected areas to rescue people, if needed.
