By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Feb 11 - Former Additional Chief Secretary MGVK Bhanu today joined the Congress and announced his intention to seek the partys ticket to contest from the Tezpur Lok Sabha constituency in the forthcoming general elections.

Bhanu formally took membership of the Congress party during a function held at Rajiv Bhawan here.

Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora, former minister and Deputy Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) Rakibul Hussain and other senior leaders were present on the occasion.

I will file application seeking candidature from the Tezpur constituency for the Lok Sabha elections. The party will decide if I should be given the ticket from Tezpur. If I receive candidature, I will campaign with all strength and dedication to win the seat. However, in case the party decides not to give me the ticket, then also I will work hard for whomever the party nominates for the Tezpur seat, said Bhanu.

After his retirement last year, Bhanu settled down in Tezpur.

Born in Andhra Pradesh, Bhanu came to Assam in 1985 after getting selected for the Indian Administrative Service and served in a number of positions in the States bureaucracy before retiring last year.

Bhanu said he can bring his administrative experience for benefit of the Congress as well as the people of Assam. He also said that Assam is a place where people of various castes, creed and communities reside together in harmony and added there are more than 50,000 people of Telugu-origin in Sonitpur district alone.

Bhanus father-in-law Rangaiah Naidu had served in the Union Ministry under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao from 1991 to 1996.

Along with Bhanu, some others also joined the Congress during the event.

Among them were Janata Dal (United) womens cell president Laxmi Goswami, retired police officer Biren Gogoi, academician Momi Sarma and businessman Lalit Bhopal.

Speaking on the occasion, APCC chief Bora said the coming Lok Sabha polls will be the second war of Indian Independence. He accused the ruling BJP of eroding the autonomy of institutions and causing harm to the secular fabric of the country.
