Bengali bodies unhappy with Centres move

By Correspondent

SILCHAR, Nov 25 - Unhappy with the Union Governments approach in granting citizenship to the displaced Bengali Hindus coming into Assam from Bangladesh, the Sara Bharat Bengali Udvastu Sanjukta Sangram Committee has announced a protest at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi on December 17. The committee together with the All Assam Bengali Youth Students Federation and the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students Association along with an assembly of other Bengali associations from various parts of India, particularly the eastern front will host a national convention at the Constitution Club, New Delhi on December 16.

Speaking about their dissatisfaction on the delay in granting citizenship despite publication of the gazette notification in September this year, the State general secretary of the committee and also the convener of the convention, Beni Madhav Roy said we have been waiting for a decision from the Government. But with the way things have unfolded in the recent past, it is least likely to expect any positive results in this winter session of the Parliament. Hence, the BJP-led Government must be made aware that people will not remain silent on the issue. All the Bengali MPs have expressed solidarity towards our mission.

Some of their demands include incorporation of all Bengali Hindus in the final list of NRC, giving citizenship rights by introducing a Bill in this winter session of the Parliament, release of Bengali Hindus from the detention camps etc.
