Bear cubs to be released in wild

By The Assam Tribune

ITANAGAR, Dec 14 Four orphaned Asiatic black bear cubs raised at Kaziranga National Park have been shifted to Mehao wildlife sanctuary in Arunachal Pradeshs Lower Dibang Valley for rehabilitation.

Two of the cubs were rescued by Wildlife officials from Jhum cultivated areas in north Tripura. The third was found in Medo under Namsai sub-division in Arunachal Pradesh and the fourth from Sonai in Assams Sonitpur district, officials said here today.

Twenty-six such cubs were so far rehabilitated since 2006 by various organisations in the North East. The cubs would initially be monitored by Wildlife officials and once they are able to fend for themselves, they would be monitored remotely to confirm survival in the wild, officials said.

The Asiatic black bear in North East is facing threats of extinction, mainly because of frequent cases of displacement, conflicts with people and poaching. PTI
