NAMRUP, May 29 � Basanta Utsav was celebrated recently on the open stage of the Assam Petrochemicals Ltd (APL) here with a two-day programme under the auspices of the Basanta Utsav-2014 Celebration Committee.
The utsav began with the hoisting of the Bihu flag by Satyajit Borkataki, president of the celebration committee. This was followed by smriti tarpan which was initiated by Debabrata Bhattacharjya, General Manager (Operations), APL, and Dimbeswar Kakati, Deputy General Manager (HRM), APL. Later, a cultural procession was taken out which was inaugurated by APL MD Ratul Bordoloi.
The other programmes on the first day were drawing competitions, traditional koni junj and Bihu dance. The first day�s programme was capped by a cultural show organised in memory of late Diganta Saikia and late Gojen Gogoi, two former employees of the APL. After paying tributes to the duo, the cultural show was inaugurated by Debabrata Bhattacharjya, General Manager (Operations), in which many local artistes participated.
On the concluding day, the utsav came alive with a Jeng Bihu dance performed by the Kaylanmoyee Mahila Samiti Jeng Bihu troupe, APL, which was followed by the prize distribution ceremony.
The two-day programme ended with another cultural show dedicated to the memory of two employees of the APL, late Achyut Kumar Phukan and late Hemanta Gogoi. Inaugurating the show, APL MD Ratul Bordoloi, in his brief speech, dwelt at length on the significance of Bihu and appealed to the younger generation to take positive steps to preserve the pristine nature of Bihu songs and dance. The performance by guest artiste Barnali Kalita in the cultural show on the concluding day regaled the audience.
