Barpeta situation under control

GUWAHATI, Aug 29 � Situation in Barpeta, which witnessed violent incidents during the All Assam Minority Students� Union (AAMSU)-sponsored Assam bandh yesterday, was totally under control today. However, tension is still prevailing in some parts of the district, said Minister Nilamani Sen Deka, who is monitoring the situation there.

Meanwhile, 50 persons have been arrested in connection with yesterday�s incidents of violence in the district.

A peace committee has been formed with five representatives from each of the communities at a meeting today with the president and general secretary of the Barpeta Road Sahitya Sabha as its president and secretary, to facilitate restoration of peace and amity in the district.

Addressing the meeting attended by the leading citizens and representatives of various organisations, Minister Deka made a fervent appeal to the people to help in the process of restoration of peace and amity in the district and its people.

The last rites of Jnanendra Mandal, the handcart puller who was killed in the yesterday�s violence at Khoirabari, were performed today. Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta paid an exgratia amount of Rs 1 lakh to the next of kin of Mandal, said the Minister.
