Barpeta MP visits flood-hit Bongaigaon

By Correspondent

BONGAIGAON, Sept 5 - After visiting flood-hit areas of Bongaigaon district on Friday, Barpeta Lok Sabha MP, Sirajuddin Azmal, criticised the Congress-led State Government for depriving the flood victims of their due need and support.

The flood-victims in the district are not getting sufficient food and other relief materials, crop lands have been marooned, residential plots are being eroded by rivers, said Azmal, before meeting the Deputy Commissioner in the afternoon.

Sharing his experience gained after visiting the flood-affected sites in the district, Azmal, who belongs to the AIUDF said that he and his two colleagues (MPs) had met the Union Water Resource Minister Uma Bharti twice and asked for funds for taking up measures to mitigate the damage of flood and erosion in his constituency and the State. However, he alleged that the Union Minister had not released any such fund despite her commitment.

According to the MP, fund of around Rs 20,000 crore would be needed to address the flood problem in the State.

The MP criticised the ruling Congress government in the State for its apathy towards the flood-affected people in the districts and said that the Congress party, which is infested with infighting, has no time to feel the woes of the poor flood victims. On a question on Himanta Biswa Sarmas move to the BJP, the MP said that Sarma is not a factor for AIUDF as the BJP thinks.
