GUWAHATI, June 15 An employee of Mumbai-based Bhaba Atomic Research Centre (BARC) has been arrested by Assam Police on charges of demanding dowry and causing mental harassment to his wife, who hails from Guwahati.

Santosh Kumar Misra (35), who originally hails from Bihar, married Poonam Tiwari of Maligaon area of Guwahati on June 25, 2007 and stayed mostly in Mumbai due to his occupation with the research centre, police said.

It has been alleged that Misra and his family members have been demanding dowry ever since he got married with Poonam.

Poonam, according to police, was subjected to mental harassment and even though the victim's family obliged to some of the monetary demands, Misra's family kept on asking for more.

Parmeswar Tiwari, father of Poonam, finally lodged a complaint with the Women Police Station on March 3 this year and a case (37/2011) was registered under Sec 498(A)(B) and 120(B) IPC. Police brought Misra from Mumbai yesterday and he has been forwarded to judicial custody today, police said.

The State, it needs mention, has witnessed a spurt in dowry cases with over 600 dowry deaths registered in the last six years.
