SILCHAR, May 19 - Rich tributes were paid to the 11 language martyrs at various places across Barak Valley amidst various events on the occasion of 58th Language Martyrs Day on Sunday.
People cutting across party lines including State Minister Parimal Suklabaidya, Silchar MP Sushmita Dev, Cachar DC Laya Madduri, representatives from various socio-cultural organisations assembled at the Silchar crematorium to offer their tributes. Later in the day, the political leaders along with commoners reached Silchar Railway station and paid floral tributes at the altar of the martyrs. In the afternoon, artists and cultural activist performed recitations and displayed paintings and art work at the Gandhibagh park premises.
Addressing a meeting at the railway station, Suklabaidya said �both Centre and State government is working to respond to the demands for renaming the station as Bhasha Shaheed station. NoC regarding the demand has been issued by the Centre. Also, the Language Martyrs Column, as allotted in the State Budget will be constructed here in the coming days.�
Susmita Dev expressed her mind regarding the demand for renaming the station by asserting the need for all leaders across party lines feel the need for renaming the station. �We are on the same page to echo the demand to rename the station,� Dev said.
Silchar MLA Dilip Kumar Paul, in his speech said that coming up of the column shall be a befitting tribute to the martyrs. Dr Shah Mohammad Tanvir Mansur, assistant high commissioner, Bangladesh at Guwahati also visited Gandhibagh and paid tributes.
Artistes from various platforms were seen displaying drama, sketches, paintings across the park throughout the day. Streets of the city were decorated with floral designs and candles were illuminated in the evening in the memory of the martyrs.
