Bank scheme for Dimapur jail inmates launched

DIMAPUR, Sept 2 - Central Jail, Dimapur in association with Axis Bank has launched a personal bank account scheme for prisoners of the jail. The initiative seen as a major step towards corrective and reformative measures for the inmates was undertaken by Nagaland Prisons department.

According to a local daily here today, as part of the first phase, senior superintendent of Central Jail Dimapur Imtiangshi Ao handed over the personal savings pass books to seven inmates in presence of Axis Bank officials and jail officers and staff in the jail complex.

Jailor Dr Woben Yanthan, in his address, said the banking facility extended to prisoners is the first of its kind in the history of the State�s Prisons department. He said the objective of launching the facility is to encourage inmates to take part in the various corrective activities initiated by the department.

Terming the introduction of banking facilities to prisoners as a positive and welcome step, Dr Woben also mentioned that poverty is one of the major factors in development of criminal tendencies among people. He hoped that the association between the Prisons department and Axis Bank would continue for the benefit of the inmates.

Deputy VP and Cluster head, Axis Bank Dimapur, Madan Gopal Boro said the bank was delighted to be a part of the corrective measures undertaken by the Prisons department and expressed optimism that banking facilities would be covered in other district jails too in the coming days.

For the convenience of the inmates, Boro also informed that prisoners can operate their accounts on zero balance. Branch Manager, Axis Bank Purana Bazaar, also spoke on the occasion.
