Bank branches authorised to accept I-T returns

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 18 On account of the heavy rush for income tax remittance toward the end of March, June, September and December, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has authorized some of the bank branches in Guwahati to accept payment of income tax dues in cash or by cheque.

It is observed that the rush for remitting income tax dues at RBI has been far too heavy towards the end of March/June/September/December and it becomes difficult for the RBI to cope with the pressure of the receipts, although additional counters to the maximum extent possible are provided for the purpose. Consequently, the public is required to wait in queues at the bank unnecessarily for long periods, the apex bank said in a press release.

It said that for public convenience, some branches of State sector banks have been authorized to receive the payment of income tax.

In State Bank of India (SBI), the branches that can accept the payments are Guwahati Main, Chenikuthi, Dispur, Fancy Bazar, AT Road, Gauhati University, Guwahati Refinery, Gauhati Medical College, Gita Nagar, Madgharia, Maligaon, New Guwahati, Guwahati Airport, Silpukhuri, South Guwahati, West Guwahati and ICD Amingaon.

In United Bank of India (UBI), the Guwahati Main branch, Fancy Bazar, Noonmati, Secretariat, Ulubari and North Guwahati can do so.

Besides, the UCO Main, Guwahati, Dispur, Silpukhuri, Maligaon and Rajgarh branches of UCO Bank, and the Guwahati, Fancy Bazar, Ulubari and Bhangagarh branches of Central Bank of India are permitted to accept income tax returns.

To obviate the inconvenience involved, assesses in the city are advised in their own interest to avoid last minute rush, by remitting their income tax dues sufficiently in advance of the due date, said the apex bank.
