Bandh hits life in Manipur

By Correspondent

IMPHAL, Feb 7 The All Manipur VDF (Village Defence Force) Welfare Association-sponsored indefinite Statewide bandh from Wednesday midnight has hit normal life in the State today.

Though the busy Khwairamband Keithel in Imphal town was open as usual, public presence was minimal due to suspension of passenger services across the State.

There was thin attendance in government offices.

The bandh severely affected the commercial centres in almost all the satellite towns in the State.

The bandh was, however, partial in some of the hill districts of the State.

The VDF personnel are demanding higher pay. In spite of a paltry salary of Rs 3,000 per month, the VDF personnel are doing their duties sincerely and many personnel of them were injured or maimed in the line of duty, the association claimed.

The VDF personnel were recruited in 2009 and 2010 through open recruitment processes.

Meantime, the proposed 48-hour bandh called by the Sadar Hills Chiefs Association in Sadar hills has been deferred following an appeal by the Tribal Chiefs Forum, Manipur. The bandh was scheduled to begin at 5 am today.
