Ban imposed on polythene bags in Dibrugarh

By Staff correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Oct 26 - Passing prohibitory orders to ban the use of plastic bags and polythene carry bags has become a routine affair in the district even as their use and sale have continued unabated despite the passage of several prohibitory orders in the past.

The district magistrate today passed a fresh prohibitory order under Section 144 of the CrPC to ban the use of certain types of plastic and polythene carry bags with immediate effect. As per the order, all carry bags made of virgin or recycled plastic less than 50 microns in thickness have been banned in the district.

Any violation of the order will be punishable under the provision of Section 188 of the IPC and under the relevant provisions of law, the order issued by District Magistrate Laya Madduri stated.

Similar orders were violated in the past and the use of polythene and plastic carry bags has never completely stopped here.

The Dibrugarh district administration had earlier formed special teams to conduct raids and check the use of banned plastics, but failed to control the practice.

The teams under executive magistrates were asked to conduct raids and searches to seize and confiscate banned items from wholesalers and retailers. The use and sale of plastic and polythene carry bags continue in vegetable markets, fish and meat markets, bakery shops, retail shops, restaurants and other kiosks.
