Bajali flood situation improves slightly

PATACHARKUCHI, July 25 - The overall flood situation of the Bajali subdivision has improved a bit following receding of water level of the rivers. But people living in the flood-hit areas are still worried over possible release of more water from the Kuri Chhu Dam of Bhutan.

It may be recalled that several areas of the subdivision were submerged by flood water following the release of excess water by the Druk Green Power Corporation Limited, Bhutan yesterday.

The College Road, Bajali HS School, Sikshapeeth High School, KK Handique Jr. College, Pathsala Sub Divisional Civil Hospital, are still under water. According to reports, around 55 villages have been affected with a population of 48,675 under Bajali Revenue Circle. The MLA of Patacharkuchi reviewed the overall flood situation and assured all possible help from his side. Altogether three persons have lost their lives so far in the subdivision.

Today relief materials were distributed in Pashim kathalmuri, Bandhasidhani, Dhumar Pothar, Nalana, Muguria, Bamakhata, and other affected area informed Rashmi Rekha Borgohain, Circle officer of Bajali. She also claimed that relief and rescue operation has been carried out in the flood-hit Bajali subdivision.

Barpeta Correspondent adds: The Deputy Commissioner of Barpeta district today reviewed the flood situation and asked the concerned officials to take all possible steps to tackle the flood problem.

The DC also discussed in details about the prevailing situation following the release of water from Kuri Chhu dam of Bhutan. According to official sources, around 280 people were evacuated from Kathamurighat by Army personnel last night. The Deputy Commissioner appealed to the people not to panic . �We are geared up to tackle any adverse situation in the wake of release of water from the dam,� he said.

Meanwhile , severalorganisations have provided relief to the affected people in various parts of the district.
