Bail petition moved for Akhil Gogoi

By Staff Correspondent

DIBRUGARH, Dec 21 - Hours after the Gauhati High Court quashed the detention order under the National Security Act against peasant leader Akhil Gogoi, a bail petition was moved before the District and Sessions Judge here with regard to the Moran PS case (180/17) under Sections 120 B/121/124 (A)/109/153/153 (A)/34 of the IPC (pertaining to sedition and other charges), advocate Pranjal Gogoi, Akhil Gogois lawyer, told The Assam Tribune.

The Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) leader was arrested by Dibrugarh Police from his Chandmari residence in Golaghat district on September 13, a day after he allegedly said at a rally in Moran that it would be imperative for the people of Assam to take up arms if Hindu Bangladeshis were accommodated in the State. Gogoi was also accused of sedition and spreading religious animosity.

However, on September 25, 12 earlier cases were slapped on Gogoi, which were registered in different police stations of the State, to make him an accused under the NSA.

After the Gauhati High Court quashed the detention of Akhil Gogoi, there was joy among the members of the KMSS, Chah Shramik Mukti Sangram Sammittee and other sister organisations. Gogois supporters celebrated the development by bursting crackers and distributing sweets at Thana Chariali.

Pradip Haloi, vice president of district unit of the KMSS, described the High Court judgement as a victory of the people and of democracy.
