Bah-Gosai festival celebrated

BARAMA, April 23 � Sarania Kachari people in association with the All Assam Sarania Kachari Students� Union centrally celebrated 8th Bah Gosai festival at Barimakha High School premises in Baksa district with two-day colourful programmes recently.

The programmes included inauguration of main gate, manch inauguration, �Bhagabat path�, competition on the dress of Sarania women, release of souvenir, flag hoisting, smriti tarpan, Bah-Gosai cultural procession and an open meeting.

Lankeswar Deka, president of All Assam Sarania Kachari Students� Union hoisted the flag of the union while Umesh Sarania, general secretary performed smriti tarpan on the occasion.

Ramesh Chandra Das, chairman of Sarania Kachari Unnayan Parishad while inaugurating the open meeting held on the occasion said that Sarania Kachari community has got its own identity. In course of his speech, Das said that Sarania Kachari one of the sub-tribes of the Kacharis, are one of the major tribal groups who belong to the Mongoloid racial stock like other tribal communities living in Assam .

The Sarania Kachari community has grown up in their own culture, customs, traditions, thoughts, rituals and rites. The student organisation of the Sarania Kacharis have been democratically fighting for its development as the Saranias are lagging behind in every respect. In course of his deliberation Das highlighted the significance of Bah Gosai utsov saying that Bah Gosai Utsav is being celebrated every year on Bohag 6th by the Saranias with their own customs to mark the occasion of Basanta utsov like other tribal communities.

He appealed to the Sarania Kachari people to fight for their existence and development challeging deprivation and suppression. He also expressed serious concern as there was not a single MLA or MP to represent the Sarania Kacharis community to fight for their existence in Assam Assembly or in the Parliament. Md Ismail Hussain, noted writer addressing the meeting as chief guest said that Sarania Kachari people are being deprived in different fields and this is the time to identify the hidden truth of the history of deprivation and suppression. The Saranias are lagging behind economically, educationally, politically and other respects too.

He urged the Saranias in general and the student community in particular to come forward. In course of his speech, Md Hussain mentioned the names of Koch community and the Bodos who are now gradually advancing. Munsing Brahma, MCLA of Dihira constituency, Dhaneswar Huzuri, senior journalist spoke among others in the meeting. The meeting was presided over by Lankeswar Deka, president of All Assam Sarania Kachari Students Union while Dipak Deka, deputy chief of Sarania Kachari Development Council inaugurated the cultural procession.
