Bagan lift Federation Cup

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, May 21 - Kolkata giant Mohun Bagan Athletic Club drubbed Aizawl FC 5-0 to lift the coveted Federation Cup for the first time since 2008 at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai here today.

Although both sides failed to break the deadlock in the first half, Mohun Bagan got their act together to completely dominate the second session and pumped in all the five goals.

Aizawl FCs Yuta Kinowaki had the first shot on target in the eighth minute but his effort was ably foiled by the Mohun Bagan custodian Debjit Majumder.

Mohun Bagan had the perfect setting to take the lead in the 35th minute as Katsumis well directed corner found an unmarked Cornell Glen inside the box. But the latters attempt from close range was so weak that it failed to even make the Aizawl FC goal keeper Soram Poirei Anganba move from his position.

Switching over the sides, Aizawl FC players failed to keep up with the Mohun Bagans all out attack strategy.

It didnt take much long for the Kolkata outfit to finally surge ahead as Sony Norde made absolutely no mistake in finding the back of the net in the 48th minute. Bikramjit delivering a lobbed pass into the Aizawl box saw Jeje chest it down onto the path of an onrushing Norde. The Haiti star placed the ball into the net with ease.

Things turned even worse for Aizawl FC as Katsumis well elevated corner took the aerial curve before finding L Dhanachandra Singh, whose powerful header stormed into the net in the 58th minute.

To rub salt into Aizawl FCs woes it was Mohun Bagans Mizo star Jeje who went on to score with a sublime strike in the 73rd minute. Glens back heel to Jeje saw the latter curl the ball into the bottom corner.

Sony Norde did a tremendous job to run into the box from the left before providing Bikramjit the perfect setting to slot the ball into an empty net from close range in the 82nd minute. Jeje ensured his brace with yet another goal in the 88th minute.

The giant killer Aizwal FC players simply moved around without any positive move in the second session.
