By Staff Correspondent

JORHAT, Aug 23 - A youth reportedly snatched a bag containing a cash amount of Rs 7 lakh belonging to a contractor from a restaurant at Mithapukhuri area on Thursday and fled.

A police source stated that as per FIR lodged by contractor Jewel Bora, he (Bora) was having his meal with two of his friends at a restaurant in the afternoon after withdrawing Rs 7 lakh from two banks and had kept the cash amount inside a bag which was placed on a chair next to him.

As Bora went to wash his hands, a youth occupying a table near him suddenly snatched the bag and fled on a motorcycle parked outside the restaurant.

The act of lifting the bag and fleeing was recorded in the CCTV cameras installed inside the restaurant. Police investigation into the case is on.

During the past fortnight, an incident of burglary committed in a wholesale medicine shop in the New Balibat locality in the heart of the town was reported three days after a Bajaj Pulsar motorcycle along with two electric motors from water pump sets were reportedly stolen from a bhujiya factory at Phansi Ali locality of the town.

Since the beginning of this year there has been a spurt in incidents of thefts in shops, lifting of vehicles along with incidents of snatching bags containing cash and also mobile handsets from pedestrians and pillion-riders by motorbike-borne youths in and around the town.

It may be mentioned here that in January this year, Jorhat Police had installed 32 CCTV cameras in different areas of the town under a project to assist in curbing crime.
