GUWAHATI, Aug 3 The Badungduppa Theatre group that has been concentrating on mental development of the children through the medium of theatre has come up with three productions this year for childrenand all the three plays revolve around themes that are socially relevant.
The Badungduppa Theatre, which has carved a name for itself through unconventional presentation of plays, has since the last three years been conducting a theatre workshop for children during the summer vacation. During this month-long workshop, the children are given an opportunity to showcase their creativity and skill. At the end of the workshop, the children present the plays on an open air stage.
Sukracharya Rabha of Badungduppa informed that the response of the children to this workshop has been growing over the years. The objective of this theatre workshop is to instill discipline in the children through entertainment and knowledge, said Rabha adding that theatre has succeeded in infusing discipline in the children and also keeping them occupied in a fruitful way.
In our workshop, the children do exercise, draw and enjoy every moment in a free atmosphere, said Rabha.
The children productions this year are Jumang which means a dream, Senirami Chocolate and Tou (knowledge bird). The treatment of all the three plays is very natural, a trademark style of Budungduppa. The message to the society goes through themes that are reflective of the daily life of the common people. Jumang stresses the need of freedom for the children, Senirami Chocolate highlights the exploitation of children and Tou unfolds the relation between man and Nature.
Rabha said that by keeping the presentation technique simple, theatre can reach to a greater number of audiences. We want to take theatre to the grassroots. So treatment of a play is very important for us, said Rabha.
