HAILAKANDI, Dec 14 - The people here have demanded B-category railway station status for Hailakandi with three yards instead of the present D-category. All the municipality ward commissioners of the town also last week submitted a memorandum to the Union Railway Minister in this regard.
They alleged that a move is afoot to grant the B-category status, a due for Hailakandi station, to Lala, which is some 17 km from this district headquarters town. They also threatened to launch a vigorous movement for the B-category status of Hailakandi station.
Meanwhile on Sunday, a public meeting was held on the premises of the Hailakandi railway station with Nagarik Adhikar Suraksha Samiti secretary Hirakjyoti Bhattacharjee in the chair, where the demand of B-category status for the railway station was raised. In the meeting, speakers vowed to thwart all sorts of conspiracy to deny Hailakandi railway station of its rightful status.
