B Borooah College team wins Manash Borah debate

GUWAHATI, June 3 - The 8th Manash Borah Memorial North East Inter Institutional Debating Competition was held recently at the Pragjyoti ITA Auditorium, Machkhowa here, said a press release.

The competition is sponsored by the Manash Borah Memorial Trust and is organised by the Old Boys Association, Sainik School Goalpara (OBASSG) in memory of late Manash Borah, an alumnus of Sainik School Goalpara.

The topic for the competition was, in the opinion of the House �Use of social media has increased indifference towards society�.

The competition was held in Assamese as well as in English. Inaugurating the competition, Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury, former Pro-Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University stressed the importance of such debating competitions as they help generate opinions and conclusions on important issues. He also stressed the need for inculcating respect for opposite views that he found lacking in the contemporary political system.

Earlier, Dr Shahnaaz Rahman, president, Manash Borah Memorial Trust, delivered the welcome address and recounted a brief history of the competition.

The gathering was also addressed by Brig (retd) Ranjit Borthakur, president, OBASSG.

More than twenty institutions from across the State participated in the competition. At the end of a fierce competition, Bishaldeep Kakati of Pandu College was adjudged the best debater, while Nandini Chakraborty of B Borooah College and Tahmina Rahman of Gauhati University came 2nd and 3rd respectively. The team from B Borooah College comprising Nandini and Kuldeep Soren was adjudged the best team. The prizes were Rs 7000, Rs 5000 and Rs 3000 respectively for the best three debaters, while the best team got the Manash Borah Memorial Running Trophy.

The speaker for the competition was Dr Monirul Hussain, former HoD, political science, Gauhati University. The competition was judged by Manabendra Sarma from B Borooah College, Ratna Singh from Little Angel School, Sonapur and Dipak Sarma, a media VB personality.
