Ayush helps in tackling various chronic diseases

NEW DELHI, April 9 - While advocating integration of Ayush (traditional system of medicine such as Ayurveda) in the public health system, India is trying to tackle chronic diseases particularly the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like diabetes by introducing scientifically-validated herbal drugs.

The theme of World Health Day 2019 observed on April 7 of each year was �Universal Health Coverage: Everyone, Everywhere�.

As part of the government�s Ayush intervention in public health, scientifically-validated herbal drugs such as BGR-34 are being offered to diabetic patients as a curative and preventive health strategy. BGR-34, an antidiabetic herbal drug, has been jointly developed after standardisation and preclinical studies by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research's (CSIR) two Lucknow-based labs � Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (CIMAP) and National Botanical Research Institute (NBRI).

Formulation of medicinal herbs like daruharidra, giloy, gudmar and bitter gourds which are known for their anti-diabetic and anti-hyperglycaemic agents, BGR-34 has been developed as an ayurvedic formulation and is marketed by Delhi-based AIMIL Pharmaceuticals, a press release said.

According to WHO, diabetes affects approximately 42 crore people worldwide with China topping the list.
