AYP protests hydel project decision

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 6 The Asom Yuva Parishad (AYP) on Saturday burnt the effigies of Union Power Minister Piyus Goel and Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi in protest against the direction of the Union Government to resume the execution of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project (LSHEP) at Gerukamukh and the abnormal rise in the prices of essential commodities.

In a statement here, the Yuba Parishad warned that it would resist construction of the LSHEP at any cost. The lack of commitment of the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre has now come to the fore. Modi, in his first tour to a foreign country, indulged in a conspiracy to devastate Assam. The version of the Union Power Minister on the LSHEP is the latest proof of the Bharatiya Janata Partys love for Assam. The leaders of the Assam unit of the BJP will have to pay for this deceitful act of their party towards the people of Assam, it warned.

On the other hand, it said, the State Government with the sponsorship of the BJP-led Union Government, has been providing tacit support to the abnormal rise in the prices of the essential commodities. Significantly, the BJP-led Government at the Centre came to power with the pledge that it would bring about good days.

The Parishad would build a vigorous movement on these issues in the days to come, it warned.
