Awareness walk on diabetes organised

GUWAHATI, Nov 16 � The Lions Club of Gauhati on Sunday organized a walkathon �Strides � 2014: Lions for Diabetes Awareness�, an awareness walk on diabetes on the occasion of the World Diabetes Day.

The Walkathon was flagged off from Sports Authority of India complex, Paltan Bazar at 7.30 am by MGVK Bhanu, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Bhogeswar Baruah noted sportsperson of Assam and Arjuna Award winner and H Mani Kr Singh, Lions� district governor.

A number of eminent personalities including the DC Kamrup Metro Dr M Angamuthu, GMC Commissioner S Viswanathan, film stars Zerifa Wahid, Aasha Bordoloi and Antariksh among others took part in the programme.

During the inaugural ceremony, a citation was presented to Bhogeswar Baruah recognizing his contribution towards development of sports and youth welfare along with an honorarium. Dr BK Agarwal of Lions Club explained the objectives of the programme and also mentioned about the social contribution and responsibilities of the Lions Club towards the society, said a press statement.

More than 400 participants including, morning walkers, students, Lions family members among others took part in the programme and walked around two kilometers. This walk concluded at Gauhati Lions Eye Hospital, Chatribari at 8.30 am, which was followed by free diabetic health check-up which includes blood sugar test, body fat analysis and display of healthy diet programmes.

Lions Clubs International is among world�s largest service club organization with nearly 1.3 million members in approximately 46,000 clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas around the world. Since 1917, Lions Club has provided aids to the visually impaired and has been serving the society throughout the world.
