Awareness meetings on women�s issues

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Dec 29 - The District Women Cell of Lakhimpur held a series of meetings across the district to create awareness among women belonging to the most vulnerable sections of the society. The cell, which is chaired by Lakhimpur Deputy Commissioner Debeswar Malakar, held 18 awareness meetings on women�s issues in nine tea gardens of Lakhimpur district and nine development blocks from November 7 to November 12.

The secretary of the District Women Cell and DIPRO, Chumpy Chutia, along with other members like Additional SP Subodh Sonowal, District Welfare Officer Khagen Mohon, District Labour Officer JP Agarwala, advocate Pradeep Sharma, advocate Meenaxi Gohain Baruah, scribe Farhana Ahmed, medical officer Dr Queen Baruah and social worker Suprabha Medhi, attended meetings held in the tea gardens at Koilamari, Zoihing, Harmutty, Deejo, Ananda, Doolahat, Seajuli and Silaneebari, and the development blocks at Narayanpur, Bihpuria, Karunabari, Nowboicha, Telahi, North Lakhimpur, Bogeenadi, Ghilamara and Dhakuwakhona. Women�s issues ranging from domestic violence, early marriage and motherhood, sexual abuse, alcoholism and health problems like malnutrition and anaemia, and hygiene were discussed in those meetings.

Provisions of legal aid and mediation by the District Women Cell with regard to problems faced by women were intimated to the participants in the meetings. Rising cases of girl child trafficking and witch-hunting and other relevant issues were also discussed through the interactive method.

The participants of the meetings were sensitized on the available rights and legal protection for women � ranging from inheritance of paternal property to domestic violence and polygamy.
