Awareness drive on landslide mitigation

GUWAHATI, Aug 2 � Under the aegis of District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), Kamrup metropolitan and with active cooperation of Disaster Mitigation Society, an awareness drive is being carried out in the hill areas of Guwahati.

As part of the programme, at least five areas are covered per day in and around Guwahati. Over 50 such places have been identified to create awareness on landslide mitigation among the people.

During the meetings that preceded that drive, sub committees were constituted to monitor and coordinate with DDMA regarding landslide.

Police department, fire service, civil defence, forest and Soil conservation department are also extending co-operation to DDMA in this regard, an official statement said.

Suggestions and complaints regarding various issues related with landslides were also collected in such meetings.

In today�s meeting at Sarania hill a sub-committee was constituted to involve local people to create awareness on landslide mitigation.

The DDMA, Kamrup metropolitan organized awareness meeting at Basistha, Khanapara, Ganeshnagar, Gorchuk, Lokhra, Pamohi, Lalmati, Goranagar hill, Boragaon, Katabari, Ambari Fatasil, Dhirenpara and Saraswati hill.

It needs mention that the Government in association with DDMA and other agencies concerned has chalked a slew of measures to tackle the recurring incidents of landslides, especially during raining seasons.

Landslide has taken a number of lives in the last few years, besides redering several families homeless.
