Award to social activist

GUWAHATI, Oct 16 - For his work in creating awareness against superstition and promoting communal harmony in rural Assam and some other States of the country, social activist and secretary general of the voluntary organization �Brothers�, Dibyajyoti Saikia was conferred the Bharat Ratna Dr APJ Abdul Kalam �Rastra Ratna� Award, instituted by Dr Manibhai Manav Seva Sansthan, Maharashtra on Saturday, on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the former President.

The award is in recognition to his efforts to create awareness on witch hunting and other superstitious beliefs prevailing in the society, promoting education in rural pockets and working for communal harmony in conflict affected rural areas of several States.

Saikia, an active member of Team Anna, also received the Santa Gadge Baba Karmabhumi Award in Murtizapur of Maharashtra on Sunday. The award was given by Nehru Yuba Mandal Santa Gadge Baba Karmabhumi Seva Pratisthan, said a statement.
