AVDO foundation day observed

BONGAIGAON, Jan 30 � Around 2,000 volunteers of the Assam Village Defence Organisation (AVDO) from across the State gathered at the playground of the Industrial Training Institute, Bongaigaon to take part in the two-day celebration of the 65th foundation day of the organisation that concluded on Wednesday.

The organisation demanded increase in the remuneration of the volunteers as also more facilities to them so that they can discharge their duties properly. Earlier at the delegates session, the volunteers discussed their problems and requirements before putting their demands to the government.

�Late Hari Narayan Baruah founded the organisation at Birinasayek near Titabor on this day (January 29) in 1948. Since then, this particular day is being observed as the foundation day of the organization,� said Bongaigaon SP Abhijit Bora while addressing a meeting. He said at present there are 19,881 registered and 4,058 unregistered volunteers in the AVDO.

Assam Director General of Police Khagen Sarma on behalf of the Chief Minister announced that the remuneration of the volunteers would be increased from Rs 500 to Rs 1,000 from the next financial year. He also said that efforts would be made to solve the problems of the volunteers, besides increasing facilities for them. The DGP also expressed his desire to include women in the AVDO and said that for this, he would take initiative very soon.

Parliamentary Secretary (Home) Atuwa Munda released the souvenir of the celebration.

A colourful rally was also taken out in the Bongaigaon town to mark the celebration.

Golakganj Correspondent adds: In order to pay respects to late Hari Narayan Baruah, the 65th foundation day of the AVDO was observed at the Dhubri Police Station with a daylong programme on Wednesday. The officer-in-charge of the Dhubri Police Station, Manik Kalita inaugurated the various programmes by hoisting the flag.

Later, floral tributes were paid to late Hari Narayan Baruah. Manik Kalita, OC, Dhubri Police Station, speaking in the meeting held on the occasion, highlighted the life and activities of late Hari Narayan Baruah and urged the VDP members to follow the path shown by him. Several prominent persons and VDP members also spoke in the meeting.
