Autorickshaw strike in Silchar

SILCHAR, Sept 17 - The 24-hour �auto down� strike by the Silchar Autorickshaw Owners� Association in protest against the decision taken by the Traffic Advisory Board under the district administration to keep the autorickshaws sans the Silchar town permit outside the town area resulted great inconvenience to the public, particularly visitors to the city and schoolchildren.

Bikash Bhattacharjee, general secretary of the Autorickshaw Owners� Association, said that this was the first phase of the protest. �If the Board ignores our suggestion on the core issues, we shall intensify the movement after Vishwakarma Puja and Eid.�

Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, S Vishwanathan, said that so far the decision to keep the autos outside the town area is fetching positive feedback from the people. �We are implementing the decision taken by the Traffic Advisory Board. We shall keep a close look on the proceedings,� Vishwanathan said.
