AUS suspends Professor accused of molestation

SILCHAR, July 31 - Following ever-increasing pressure from the Assam University Students� Union, the authorities of the university issued an order and sent Dr Sudipto Sarkar, the prime accused in the molestation of a student from the Department of Agricultural Engineering, on suspension.

According to sources, Dr Sanjib Bhattacharjee, the Registrar of the varsity issued an order based on the interim report of the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and Rule 3 CCS (CCA) Rule 1965 and suspended Dr Sarkar, an Associate Professor in the Department of Agricultural Engineering of the university under the provision of Rule 10(I) of CCS (CCA) Rules 1965 and asked Dr Sarkar not to leave the university campus without prior permission from the university authorities.

Earlier in the day, a large contingent of students under the banner of the Union assembled outside the university gate and shouted slogans echoing their demands to suspend the accused Professor. At one point, as the protest grew intense, a section of the students surrounded the Vice Chancellor at his chamber at around 12 noon and made it clear that until the accused is sent on suspension, they will not leave the room.

The All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students� Association also stood behind the Assam University Students� Union expressing solidarity to the demands.
