SILCHAR, April 16 If the words of Pradeep Dutta Roy, founder president of the All Cachar Karimganj Hailakandi Students Association (ACKHSA) and advocate, are to be believed, terrorist outfit Jamat-ul-Mujahideen (JM) is spreading its tentacles in the Barak Valley. And all these are happening right under the nose of the authorities of Assam University, Silchar.

Dutta Roy claimed that aided by agencies like the ISI, the terrorist organization has been actively motivating educated youths towards antinational activities. I have a list of faculty members (most of them from the department of Bengali) and a team of students who are carrying out the activities of the terrorist group inside the varsity campus. The Indian Mujahideen (IM) is also very much a part of the plan. Their sole motive is to separate the island of peace and Assam in total from India for which they are being aided by Pakistan and China, Dutta Roy told the media here.

Elaborating on this, the former student leader said that the university is a safe haven for the activists since it is 25 km away from the city and students are at their disposal. Terming the role of the university administration sloppy in monitoring the developments and tracing out the rebels, Dutta Roy said that Prof Somnath Dasgupta had been intimated about the movements of the group inside the varsity by the intelligence department.

But, surprisingly, the vice chancellor did not take any step to bring the foul players to book so far, he said. Urging the students to focus on their academic career, the former Congressman appealed to them not to pay any heed to any offers. He added that he will raise the issue when he meets the officials of the Ministry of Human Resource Development and Home Ministry in New Delhi and will also press for engaging the Army intelligence to investigate the issue.

Meanwhile, Prof Debashish Bhattacharjee, vice chancellor in-charge has said that they were unaware of the occurrences till this was made public in the media. The matter is of national importance. If the person has claimed of any presence of JM/IM inside the varsity, we are ready to help the investigating agencies as and when required, Bhattacharjee said.

It is to be mentioned that three years ago, Dutta Roy had claimed the presence of Maoists in the valley, following which top brass Maoists leaders were caught.
