AU observes World Statistics Day

SILCHAR, Oct 22 - In sync with the rest of the world, people obsessed with numbers assembled at the Department of Statistics, Assam University, Silchar to celebrate World Statistics Day on Friday.

It may be mentioned that the United Nations Statistical Commission declared October 20 as the World Statistics Day in the year 2010.

Under the patronage of Prof Dilip Chandra Nath, Vice Chancellor of Assam University the programme was organised by Prof Dibyojyoti Bhattacharjee, the head of the department of Statistics.

Teachers of Statistics from different colleges and university along with students from both post graduate and under graduate levels attended the programme. In his speech the Vice Chancellor highlighted the significance of World Statistics Day and the role that statistics play for the development of the society. Encouraging the students, Prof Nath said, �choosing a career in Statistics, students can contribute a great deal towards development.� Sankar Goswami, faculty member of GC College explained the applications of Statistics in the different branches of knowledge.

The inaugural programme was followed by an inter college quiz competition conducted by Prof Dibyojyoti Bhattacharjee. As many as 12 teams from the different colleges and the university participated in the quiz competition. Four teams out of the twelve teams reached the finals. Nihal Deb and Abdul Mukib of SS College Hailakandi won the World Statistics Day quiz competition.

The participants have expressed their satisfaction about the way in which the quiz competition was conducted and wished that several such competitions shall be conducted in future too.
