Atwal tied 10th Woods misses cut

By The Assam Tribune

CHARLOTTE, (USA), May 5 (PTI): Arjun Atwal, who made just one cut in 11 starts before this week, showed signs of revival as he was tied 10th and in sight of his first top-10 finish at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Atwal, the only Indian winner on the PGA Tour, was seven-under 137 for two rounds following rounds of 68 and 69.

Atwals fiend Tiger Woods though missed only the eighth cut of professional career.

If Atwal manages to stay in top-10 it would be his best show since Byron Nelson event last May. A good finish here could give him some boost in what has otherwise been a dismal season.

In the first round Atwal four birdies, an eagle and two bogeys for a 68. But in the second round he cut out all errors and came in with a bogey free 69. All three birdies came on the front nine.

While Nick Watney, who had not broken 70 in previous nine rounds, led the field with an 8-under 64 on Friday that gave him a one-shot lead over Webb Simpson going into the weekend.

But the big story was Tiger Woods missing the cut by one shot. Tiger failed to make a birdie on any of the par 5s or any hole on his back nine, missing a 4-foot birdie putt on his 17th hole with the cut on the line.

Woods wound up 73 his eighth consecutive round in the 70s for an even-par 144 to miss the cut by one shot.

It was only the eighth time in 267 events on the PGA TOUR that Woods missed the cut, and the first time it happened at the same place twice Quail Hollow, where in four starts before the two missed cuts, Woods had won once and never finished worse than 11th.
