Attack on Mukhim condemned

GUWAHATI/NEW DELHI, April 19 - Condemning the attack on the home of Patricia Mukhim, Editor, Shillong Times, the board of trustees of the Centre for North East Studies and Policy Research (C-NES) has called on Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma to ensure a �robust investigation� and upholding of the law.

�The board forthrightly condemns the attack on one of the most outspoken media leaders in the country, who is a respected member of this Board of Trustees, and calls on the Meghalaya Chief Minister and those entrusted with upholding the law to show resolve in tackling the crime and the unravelling of any larger conspiracy behind the scenes,� C-NES said in a statement today.

Members of the Board include GK Pillai, former Home Secretary; Dr Jayanta Madhab, economist; Dr Mahfuza Rahman, formerly of Cotton College; Niketu Iralu, peace activist and social worker from Nagaland and Preeti Gill, independent researcher and literary agent. Dr VA Pai Panandikar, founder of the Centre for Policy Research, is chairman of the trust. Sanjoy Hazarika is the honorary managing trustee as well as international director of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative and leads the South Asia Media Defenders Networks.

�Regular updates on the progress of such crimes should be posted and the public should be informed of such developments,� the statement added.
