TURA, April 26 - An attempt to rob an ATM in the heart of Tura town was averted after alert residents raised an alarm. The thieves failed in their attempt to flee as their getaway vehicle turned turtle near Rari.
The incident took place at about 1.30 am this morning at Thakurbari ATM of SBI. One ATM robber was apprehended by police. He confessed to his crime and also identified another four involved in the incident. An alert has been issued to catch the others.
�They came in a white Bolero to rob the ATM. However, the noise alerted residents who came out. When the robbers saw people, they immediately fled,� said SP of West Garo Hills, Dr MGR Kumar.
An alert was sounded by police. �Their vehicle was later found abandoned at Rari in North Garo Hills (NGH) at about 2.45 am after it overturned. They were trying to lift the vehicle when they were intercepted. While the gang was able to flee, one of the robbers was caught,� said Dr Kumar.
The other members of the gang were able to flee while they were being taken to the hospital by the police, taking advantage of the darkness.
The gang, according to police, seemed like an interState group. The equipment, along with masks that they wore during the robbery was recovered from the vehicle. The arrested robber has been identified as one Ramjan Ali from Hajo, Kamrup in Assam.
