ATDC move to check tourism misinformation

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Aug 16 - In order to counter false and unverified contents about various tourist destinations of the State, the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) is going to launch a vigorous digital campaign with an archive of tourism-related information that would help tourists avoid any misconception and misinformation.

ATDC Chairperson Jayanta Malla Baruah today told newspersons here that the Corporation would ensure that authentic information is available on all the search engines, Youtube, social media or on any other digital mode of information dissemination.

In order to have citizens participation in our efforts as well as to provide accurate information about the prominent as well as lesser known tourist destinations, we are organising three categories of tourism-based competitions. The best contributors will be rewarded on the occasion World Tourism Day on September 27. The videos, photographs and matters coming to us through these contests will also be used to enrich our digital archive, Baruah said.

The ATDC has invited entries for its short film competition, write-up competition and photography competition within September 20.

In his Independence Day speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi exhorted the citizens to visit at least 15 domestic tourist destinations by 2022 and he made a special mention about the NE region. Since majority of the population depends on the digital mode while seeking information, at our end, we can ensure that any myth or misinformation available on the digital arena is strongly countered.

It is seen that some false and fictitious videos and information about Kamakhya Temple or some other destinations pop up while searching for these sites. In the coming days this wont happen, he added.

Entries for the short film should be accompanied with a brief caption containing the date, time and place of the production. Entries can be sent through Speed Post or e-mail, details of which would be available on the ATDC website. The write-up competition requires a catchy write-up that contains maximum information within just 250 words. Similarly, entries to the photo competition should depict the tourism destination, place, spot or products of Assam along with a caption.
