ATASU demands ST status

TINSUKIA, Dec 29 � Demanding Scheduled Tribe status for the Ahom ethnic group the activists of the Tinsukia district committee of All Tai Ahom Students� Union (ATASU) has resorted to protest programme at Thana Chariali here today.

Shouting slogans against the Central and the State Government for not taking any action for providing ST status to Ahom ethnic group, the student body burnt the effigies of Rani Narah, Union Ministers for Tribal Affairs and Rajib Lochan Pegu.

The student body alleged that inspite of assurances given by the State Government prior to every election, the State Government has not taken any step and if the Government does not provide ST status before the ensuing Parliamentary election then the Congress party will have to face the problem.

More over the student body demands that the Tribal Affairs Ministry of Assam should be given to a non tribal MLA and warned that the protest programmes will continue till its demands are fulfilled.
