Assamese society at a crossroads: Prof Choudhury

By STAFF Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 10 - The Assamese society today is at the crossroads and it apparently does not have any clear idea of what lies ahead. It is in such trying times that people can look up to history to rediscover their sense of self-respect.

Prof Amarjyoti Choudhury said this while releasing a book titled Asomiya Swabhimanar Ruprekha by Mayur Bora at a function held at the Kanaklal Baruah Auditorium of the Assam State Museum here today.

Prof Choudhury added that in order to be inspiring, self-respect or self-esteem has to be an inclusive concept and not something narrow and aggressive. Appreciating the author, he said Bora has successfully brought the issue of Assamese nationalism and self-esteem to the main discourse.

Others who shared the dais in the book release function were senior journalist Ajit Bhuyan, senior advocate Arup Borbora and senior journalists Utpal Baruah and Nitumoni Saikia.

Bhuyan, in his address, stressed the need for strengthening Assamese nationalism against the backdrop of outsiders trying to weaken our Assamese identity.

Borbora lauded the author saying that he has been consistently raising questions on various issues and on the society.

Saikia said the book provided answers to some complicated matters concerning nationalism and it could be used as a reference book on Assamese nationalism..

Ananta Hazarika from Banalata, the publisher, also spoke on the programme. Mridul Haloi anchored the programme.
