GUWAHATI, Oct 18 - Assamese film Haanduk, which explores militancy through the story of a mother who loses her son, will compete for top honours at the India Gold section of the 18th edition of the Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival which begins on October 20.
India Gold is a competitive section containing the first films of Indian directors. It is the place to find emerging talent and storytelling styles that are far removed from the mainstream. Eleven films will compete in this section.
Haanduk, directed by Jaicheng Jai Dohutia, is about untraced extremist Mukti�s mother Heramoni, who, after performing his last rites, learns that his death cannot be confirmed by the outfit and does not know how to respond, and about Biplob, who having left the outfit, is unable to be part of the mainstream surrendered rebels, and thus, has his own problems of existence.
Haanduk, a Moran word, means a very remote interior place or dark corner of a house. The main star cast includes Bandoi Chetia, Bishal Anurag, Nivedita Baruah and Jitu Moran.
