Assamese Dept at TU from next session: Sahitya Sabha

GUWAHATI, March 9 - The University Grants Commission (UGC) has conceded to the demand of the Asam Sahitya Sabha for establishment of a full-fledged Assamese Department in Tezpur University. The Department will start functioning from the next academic session, said the Sahitya Sabha in a statement here on Friday.

The statement, issued by Sabha president Dr Paramananda Rajbongshi, said that the Sabha had sent a memorandum to the UGC following a series of discussions with the Vice Chancellor of Tezpur University. Rajbongshi hailed the efforts taken by both the Vice Chancellor of the University Dr Binod Kumar Jain and its Registrar Dr Biren Das to obtain the UGC approval for setting up the Assamese Department in the University.

He also informed that the Sabha is for doing research activities of the universities in Assamese, publication of textbooks at all levels in Assamese and appointing publication secretaries for the purpose if the situation so demands, preparation of comprehensive glossary in Assamese and meting out equal treatment to both English and Assamese in administrative matters.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of the International Women�s Day, Rajbongshi made an appeal to the women members of the Sabha to work for a strong and colourful society. They should also keep a strict vigil on the implementation of the Official Language Act of the State by the Government departments and launch drives to generate awareness among the people against illicit liquors and drugs etc., in the tea estates, he said.
