GUWAHATI, Jan 7 � Assam should have gained seven points with a 10-wicket win against Services in their Group C Ranji Trophy match, but requiring just 27 runs for victory, the host team lost as many as five wickets in reaching the small target on the third day of the four-day match at the Barsapara cricket stadium here today.
Assam scored 257 in reply to Services� 113 in the first innings, resuming at the yesterday�s total of 211 for eight. J Syed Mohammad remained unbeaten on 56 off 128 balls.
Spinner Sarupam Purkayastha destroyed the Services second innings with a five-wicket haul while Arup Das and Syed Mohammad captured two wickets each.
The visiting team began with a positive note as both the openers started gathering runs. But the fall of opener Aman Chanderkant Sharma (23) triggered their down fall. Rajat Paliwal was their top scorer with 48 off 154 balls while opener Soumik Chaterjee added 32.
Sarupam snapped up the Services tail taking the last four wickets and opener Chaterjee.
Assam made a poor start in the second innings losing five wickets at team�s total of 21. The last three wickets, in the form of Sib Sankar Roy, Arun Karthik and Sarupam were out at the same total. With today�s victory Assam jumped up to the second spot in the table with 14 points from four outings while Himachal Pradesh still at the top with 17 points from three matches.
