Assam take lead against Goa

By Sports reporter

GUWAHATI, Jan 22 Assam took 68-run first innings lead with five wickets in hand against Goa in their away Ranji Trophy Group C match at Goa Cricket Association Academy Ground, Porvorim today.

In reply to Goas first innings total of 175, Assam, resuming their second day with 69 for one, scored 243 for five after 107 overs of bating.

Tarjinder Singh and Syed Mohammad were at the crease with 39 and 25 respectively when stumps were drawn for the day.

The visiting team had a poor start today by losing the overnight not out opener Pallav Das after adding just two runs to his total (44). However the third wicket partnership between Sib Sankar Roy and Gokul Sharma added 80 valuable runs which consolidated Assams position. The fall of Sib Sankar at teams total of 155 again dragged Assam to a critical position. But Gokul Sharma and skipper Dheeraj Jadhav added 43 runs for the fifth wicket which enabled Assam cross the opponents first innings total.

Finally Tarjinder Singh and Syed Mohammad stitched 45 runs for the unbroken sixth wicket partnership which took Assam to a comfort zone.

The Goan bowlers today hardly could put any impact on the Assam batsmen who played very cautiously and all of them had been able to contribute.

Gokul faced 169 balls in his 165-minute innings for his compact 53. His knock was studded with two boundaries and a six.
