Assam student held in Delhi for anti-CAA stir

By Spl Correspondent

NEW DELHI, May 24 - The Delhi Police has arrested two members of womens student organisation Pinjra Tod, including a student from Assam, in connection with their alleged role in the Jafrabad anti-CAA sit-in protest in February this year.

The Jafrabad sit-in prompted a pro-CAA rally by the BJP on February 23 and a day later, riots broke out in northeast Delhi.

The two activists Devangana Kalita and Natasha Narwal are students of Jawaharlal Nehru University here and were arrested from their homes, the organisation confirmed.

In a statement, Pinjra Tod said the activists were arrested around 6 pm. They were arrested from their homes on the basis of an FIR registered by Jafrabad police station... police did not give reasons to their families for their arrest, the organisation said, condemning the witch hunt of democratic activists and students.

While Kalita is an MPhil student at the Centre for Womens Studies, Narwal is a PhD student at the Centre for Historical Studies. They are both founding members of Pinjra Tod, formed in 2015, primarily to oppose hostel curfews in Delhis colleges and universities.
