Assam stage fightback

GUWAHATI, Nov 19 � Assam�s top order put up a spirited show on the third day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Super League match at Eden Gardens, Kolkata today.

Chasing a mammoth Bengal first innings total of 562 for six declared, Assam were 293 for three when stumps were drawn for the day.

Assam openers Dhiraj Jadhav (62) and Sib Sankar Roy (89) gave a solid start to the innings and added 150 runs. Sib Shankar in particular was in good shape and hit 18 boundaries in his 151-ball innings. He stayed at the crease for 120 minutes and provided able support to Jadhav. After Sib Sankar�s departure, Jadhav also followed him at the team�s total of 167.

Skipper Amol Mozumdar and S Sriram came together for the third wicket and added 126 valuable runs before Mazumdar was out for 44.

At stumps, Sriram and Arlen Konwar were batting with 89 and zero respectively.

Sriram is batting with absolute determination and stayed at the crease for 171 minutes.

The wicket became totally batting friendly and batsmen with proper application and patience may go for a big total. Now a lot will depend on Sriram, Tarjinder Singh, Dhiraj Goswami, Kunal Saikia who have to bat throughout the day tomorrow.

For Bengal, debutant medium pacer Shami Ahmed captured all the three wickets giving away 57 runs. It was a tough day for the Bengal bowlers as they toiled the whole day without tasting much success except young Shami.
